Doctor Who Toys

Have you been a follower of the cult TV series, 'Doctor Who' and wondered how it all began? The BBC decided it would be a good idea to have a science fiction programme for young people to watch on a Saturday night and after much planning, came up with the idea of 'Doctor Who', a doctor who could travel through space and time in a capsule called the Tardis, which resembled a Police box.
This looked small from the outside, but when the doctor went into it, it seemed to be enormous inside, and the appearance changed over each series, depending where in the world it went to.
The first actor to play the part of the doctor was William Hartnell, then aged 55, and his granddaughter and travelling companion was played by Carole Ann Ford.
There were also two other travelling companions from the 20th century; Barbara and Ian, and these four formed the line-up for the first season. As time went on and new series evolved, different travellers joined the doctor and were either killed off or left in different parts of the world, so the cast was continually changing.
The first episode of the first series went out on TV on November 23rd 1963, but due to a power cut in parts of the country and the awful news of President Kennedy's assassination, it drew minimal comment, so was shown again the following week before episode two.

It really did not take off until the second series when the Daleks arrived. They were un-humanoid and like nothing ever seen on TV previously.
They frightened children by their robotic -like voices shouting, 'Exterminate, exterminate.
' They were very popular and subsequently have appeared in later series.

'Doctor Who' ran for several series and many years before taking a long break, but it returned to our screens a couple of years ago and has enthralled a new bunch of followers as well as the original fans.
Several actors played the part of the doctor over the years, and many toys have been produced to commemorate this popular series.
